Shoptalk Fall 2026 Wraps in Nashville as AI Agents Head Toward 20% of Holiday Ecommerce Traffic

By Brent W. Peterson

Shoptalk’s first Nashville edition wrapped this week, with agentic commerce, everyday value, loyalty and community dominating the agenda.

NASHVILLE, Tenn., October 1, 2026. Shoptalk Fall 2026 concluded its three-day run at Music City Center in Nashville today. It was the event’s first edition in the city.

The event brought together 3,500 leaders from retailers, brands, technology providers, investors and startups with more than 20,000 high value co-matched business meetings facilitated through its ‘Meetup’ program.

Across more than 150 speakers, one message came through, trust now decides where shoppers spend. Three themes led the conversation, AI agents reaching checkout, loyalty rebuilt around everyday value, and community moving at the speed of culture.

Joe Laszlo, Global Head of Insights at Shoptalk, said: “Loyalty is a very short word for a very complicated thing that touches every consumer touch point you have. In a future where agents do some of our shopping for us, if you just tack loyalty on, it will not feel authentic to the brand, and you increase the likelihood that a shopper will outsource the purchase decision to an agent, rather than coming directly back to you.

“What struck me at Shoptalk Fall was how far the loyalty conversation has moved beyond points. Amazon told us Prime isn’t a loyalty program. Brands from Michaels to Ulta are hosting birthday parties in their stores. And brands like Beachwaver have customers who have ordered more than 100 times, driven by community rather than discounts.

“The retailers that pull ahead will treat AI as an operating model, and community as their compass.”

AI Agents Move From Discovery to Checkout

AI agents are no longer a 2027 problem. Salesforce research shared at the show found AI agents will drive 20% of ecommerce traffic this holiday. One in three retailers will deploy a shopper agent by year end. Shoppers starting their journey with AI have grown 200%, and 74% now trust AI recommendations.

“One in five shoppers on your site this holiday season is not going to be a human. It’s going to be an agent,” said Celeste Richardson, Retail Industry Advisor, Salesforce.

Anthropic’s Parinaz Firozi said the hype phase is over. Anthropic launched Claude Commerce Agents in September, a free, open-source toolkit for retailers to build their own agents. Wix had an agent running in 15 minutes. Getting to production now takes a week or two, not months. Some merchants using Claude agents report 35% bigger carts and a 60% lift in conversion. And Anthropic is one of many options retailers have to create their own agent.

Firozi drew a hard line on advertising: “Advertising should not exist in a trusted environment where you’re interacting with your agent. We feel really strongly about no advertising and no way to actually monetize any placement in any of our services.”

Humans still matter, too. Glow Recipe tested AI replies to customer comments. “That experiment lasted about a day,” said co-founder Christine Chang.

Retailers are aiming AI at real customer problems. At David’s Bridal, that problem is stress. Brides spend 18 months on more than 300 planning tasks, often for a $50,000 wedding. Its AI-powered wedding planner, Pearl, builds a vision board and guides brides every step of the way. It also connects them with matching venues, florists and partners. “That one emotion is stress. And that’s what we’re solving for. So we built Pearl,” said David’s Bridal President and Chief Business Officer, Elina Vilk.

Everyday Value Earns the Membership

Amazon Prime now counts more than 200 million paid members in 27 countries. Worldwide Head of Prime Jamil Ghani said: “Prime is not a loyalty program and it’s not a loss leader for Amazon. We focus on the business being profitable.”

Grocery is the growth engine. Prime grew perishable grocery customers 50% in the first half of 2026. Items delivered same or next day rose 40% year over year.

The value case is clear. Prime members skipped 65 store trips last year and saved $150 in delivery fees, against a $139 membership. Prime cost $79 in 2005, or $133 adjusted for inflation.

Elsewhere, loyalty still pays. EY Studio+ found loyalty drives 26% to 50% of revenue for 45% of retailers. In a ChangeUp study of 6,500 consumers, Costco overtook H-E-B as the No. 1 retail brand experience. Six of the top 10 are grocery or warehouse clubs.

The next generation is already shaping the basket. NielsenIQ’s Jacqueline Flam said 29.1 million U.S. households include a Gen Alpha child. They spend more than $3,000 a year above the average and make 33 extra shopping trips. Gen Alpha starts using makeup at age 10 on average, and mass brands like e.l.f., Maybelline and CeraVe lead. “Gen Alpha is not just the beauty consumer of tomorrow. They are absolutely influencing spending today,” Flam said.

Commerce at the Speed of Culture

Discovery now starts in the feed. TikTok Shop logged more than 100 billion ecommerce intent searches in the U.S. last year, roughly 3,000 a second. Salesforce expects social commerce transactions to grow 9 times faster than ecommerce this holiday.

Patrick Nommensen, President, Strategic Initiatives at TikTok Shop, said: “An audience watches you. But a community participates and engages with you. The conversation about your product, about your brand is happening whether you’re there or not.”

Beachwaver founder Sarah Potempa has run 465 live streams and 1,400 hours of live selling since January 2024, drawing 780 million likes. Hundreds of her customers have ordered 30 times or more. Some have ordered over 100 times.

Prestige brands are learning to move like startups. The Estée Lauder Companies shared its vision for “moving at the speed of culture” during an opening fireside keynote with Americas President Tara Simon and Global Makeup Brands President Lisa Sequino. Later in the conference, its SVP of Data and AI Rakesh Srinivasan exclusively previewed a new agentic tool for M·A·C Cosmetics that will offer an artistry-guided experience in a conversational way. It starts by understanding the customer goal (find a product, build a look, get application tips), and uses the context the customer provides, such as their complexion, eye color, skin type, and more, to guide them. It then analyzes M·A·C’s catalog to provide product recommendations, help them build looks, and offer application tips.

Of The Estée Lauder Companies’ current pace of change, Tara Simon said: “We are throwing out the rule book in many ways and moving more quickly than we ever have. We realize the power that exists in true partnership with our retailers and in setting new standards for how we reach consumers: where they want, how they want, and with the context of culture that they are living every day.”

Smaller creators are outselling celebrities. Favorite Daughter did $2 million in sales on National Daughters Day, up 100% on last year, with 25 creators live that morning. Co-Founder and Co-CEO Sara Foster said a Dallas creator with about 60,000 followers outsells an A-list celebrity with 80 million. “The consumer has sniffed it out. They sniffed out inauthenticity and they don’t want it anymore,” she said. “We want to be recommended. We don’t want to be suggested amongst everyone else.”

Speed matters as much as authenticity. Commenting on #eyepatchgate, when Fenty Skin, Glow Recipe and Huda Beauty launched the same eye-patch format within days, Glow Recipe responded within 48 hours. It then ran a joint live with Huda Beauty. “Your community isn’t just your customers. It extends to the brands in your space,” said Christine Chang.

Physical stores are becoming community hubs. Ulta Beauty Chief Retail Officer Amiee Bayer-Thomas said 80% of its sales still come through its 1,500+ stores, which hosted 40,000 events last quarter. NielsenIQ research for Ulta found 78% of Gen Alpha discover beauty online, but 77% buy in store. “Stores are a growth engine. They are not a legacy channel that is dying off,” she said. “We have birthday parties in over 400 of our stores, which has been also something our consumer has reacted and responded exceptionally well to.”

Personalization is also bringing shoppers into stores. Crocs customers can spend up to 45 minutes customizing their own pair at Jibbitz bars in some markets. Crocs has about 3,000 single-brand stores and opened a store format in China built specifically around personalization. “If you come in and you really connect with Jibbitz, especially in a live physical environment… we actually end up having a higher lifetime value for those customers,” said Crocs’ Brand President, Anne Mehlman.
